February 18, 2017

On February 18, 2017 another chapter in Baca Cup Racing History was made as we celebrated the 39th Annual Baca Cup International Invitational Ski Race. This year we had beautiful blue skies with record breaking warm temperatures and once again some stunning performances on the race course. With an outside temperature of 45 degrees at race time our Baca Cup Ski Racers took to the course and again proved why this is one of the most awe-inspiring races in the world and a wonderful example of Euro-American cooperation. With temperatures soaring up to 65 degrees our racers and racing staff found a way to make another strong showing while showcasing their diverse cooperation, talents and skills, skiing prowess and overall dedication to the Nordic Spirit.

Special Congratulations go out to our 39th Annual Baca Cup Ski Race Winners, Drew Swope and Kathryn Swope for their blazing fast Baca Cup victories and to our Ambassador's Cup Winners Tomas Pavlicek and Renate Altman. We also wish to congratulate our 2017 Baca Cup Snowboard Champion Autumn Rhea for leading the way in our Snowboard Division. Another really fun ski race was held in a little over an hour and a half in Spring like temperatures with very few falls and NO major injuries which from our perspective is a Triumph for everyone involved!

Special Thanks go out to our Baca Cup Racing Committee for another outstanding performance in making this one of the safest and smoothest events ever. We especially recognize Chaz Wagner, Milos Toth, Sarka Fletcher, Kendal Ridner, Dasha Fletcher, Suzie Hagstrom, Ian Cruz, Tomas Pavlicek, Pavel Pitel, Dusan Neuman, Glenn Horenberg and Anthony for their contributions in registrations, race and gate coordination, videography, photography, communications, statistics, results and awards coordination and overall assistance in putting on another fine ski race. As always, we couldn't have done this without the help of all of these very talented folks and we are thankful and grateful to everyone for their outstanding participation and assistance.

We also wish to offer our sincere thanks to Sokol Washington for their continued support and to the Blue Knob Ski Resort for allowing us to carry on with our ski racing tradition for all of these years. We especially wish to thank Robin for helping us with the discounted lift tickets, Tim Corles and our awesome friend Matt from Blue Knob Ski Racing in helping set the course, calibrating and running the timing, overseeing the race structure and results and helping to keep the technical race processes under control.

This year the Awards Celebration was once again a really fun gathering as everyone worked together to ensure all the details were in place and the celebration went on as scheduled. Our Presiding Baca, Lukas Mitchell Fletcher also provided us with a very special moment as he wore the Baca Outfit for the first time in representing his Grandfather, the Fletcher/ Parma family and most importantly recognized his Czech Heritage in carrying on the Baca tradition.

Special thanks go out to Drew Swope for offering his hospitality and for the burgers and beers after the race! We also thank our presiding Bacova Sarka Phyllis Fletcher, “The Bacova” Ute Parma, Bruce and Carol Ellington for those Terrific Meatballs and the Green Pepper Soup, Dasha for her fabulous Valasske Goulash, Tomas Pavlicek for the Czech Style Sour Kraut and to Ingrid, Chaz, Lucie and everyone else who contributed to the overall culinary offerings and the final clean up after the gathering. Your involvement and contributions were greatly appreciated!

We also wish to offer our sincere thank you to Zden?k Beranek, Acting Ambassador and Chargé d'Affaires a.i. to the Czech Embassy Washington, D.C. Mr. Beranek took time away from his busy schedule to participate with his family in representing the Embassy and presenting the Ambassador's Cups to our 2017 Champions. We were so appreciative to Zdenek for his kind words and to his wife Lucie for all of their help. We are very honored to consider them among the Wonderful Friends we have made at the Embassy over the last 25+ years and we look forward to their involvement for many years to come.

In closing for 2017, Dasha and I want to say what a joy it is to participate in coordinating The Baca Cup Ski Race. We really love watching the children growing up and the opportunity to spend time with all of our Wonderful Friends, our Salas Hills Family, our Blue Knob Family and our Sokol Brothers and Sisters. The competition is always fierce but the overwhelming camaraderie, the joy of the celebration and and the opportunity to take one special day out of each year to share our “Love of the Nordic Experience is an absolute blessing. “The Baca's Dream Lives On” .

With the final results reported we are sure our founder Jiri V. Parma would be sooo proud of our young skiers and we are blessed to be a part of this in seeing his grandchildren so involved in keeping this amazing tradition alive.

We hope everyone had as much fun as we did and wish everyone a safe and happy 2017 ski season.

This year the Awards Celebration brought another set of challenges as the power went out in Salas for the majority of the celebration but in “True Baca Cup Fashion” the lanterns came out, the flashes went on the camera's, the beer was tapped and everyone worked together to assure the event went on as scheduled. Technology Update: Due to a technological break down on our website this fall, we had to re-create a lot of content and have temporarily lost our photographs of previous years. We are now in the process of capturing what we can and will be uploading more pictures in the near future. In the interim, please feel free to e-mail or send us any photo’s you may have from years past as in " TRUE Bača Cup FASHION" we will be bringing our photo section back "Better than Ever"!!

As for the Awards: The Venison Roast has been secured, Dasha has agreed to make her incredible Goulash and the Czech Beer is in stock. The Bača Cup Race Committee is hard at work preparing and our Technology is back in place to gather and calculate the results. With the kind of support we have at Blue Knob, and our "Wonderful Bača Cup Racing Staff", and of course the "Amazing Hospitality" of the Bacova , we are looking forward to the 32nd Annual Bača Cup International Invitational Ski Race being yet another great success.

Attention Bača Cup Ski Racers:

Doug Houck the General Manager at Blue Knob has made setting a great race course a priority this week. With the unusually warm weather, Blue Knob has the snow guns at the ready to add snow to the course (if necessary) when it gets colder later this week.

For the last month the skiing at Blue Knob has been fantastic and the "Bača Squad" Friends and Family Race Team (now ranked in the top 11% in the nation) has been having a great time burning up the Nastar Race Course. Please join us ("THE BACA SQUAD") at any mountain that offers Nastar Ski Racing !

Race Info: Upon arrival at Blue Knob, please make sure to go to the far left ticket (group sales) ticket window to get your Bača Cup (group rate) discount on lift tickets. Robin will be in the window waiting for Bača Cup Racers. The race will be held on the Nastar Race Course directly in the middle of the mountain and (as always) we will be ringing the Valaska Bell at race time to call the racers to the course. Blue Knob has requested a $4.00 per racer donation this year for the race fee and that will be collected at the awards gathering. Please see Dasha to pay your fee. Registration will be accepted at the gate, but please make sure to pre-register at www.bacacup.com if possible. The last online registrations will be gathered until Friday February 13th at 9:00 p.m.

The National Championships is the ultimate reward for anyone who races NASTAR and once again "THE BACA SQUAD" has placed racers in the competition. Congratulations go out to our 2008 invitee’s. Ian "flyin" Cruz, Frank Lessiak, Aden Lessiak, Reiner Lessiak, Annie Rokus, Tomas Pavlicek, Petr Cavan, Carol Ellington, David "Bruce" Ellington, Carl Fletcher, Dasha Fletcher, Jiri Fletcher, and Glenn Horenberg.

Who are North America’s fastest recreational skiers and snowboarders? That question will once again be answered during the Nature Valley NASTAR National Championships at Steamboat Springs, C0 March 13-16th, 2008.

Racers qualify by earning a top-three ranking in their age division at any of the 120 NASTAR ski resorts throughout North America. The Championships will attract more than 1,300 racers for the multi-day event, which will feature US Ski Team Pacesetters, great live music daily, a festival village, parties, raffles, product demonstrations and exhibits.

Good Luck Everyone it’s time to "Go For The Gold" !!

Once again Ian, Glenn, Diane, Frank, Dasha, Mike, and Carol did an incredible job in helping this years race be an outstanding success. The race was completed in one hour and thirty five minutes and everyone had a safe and happy ski experience.

We also wish to thank Dusan Nueman (Czech Television), Mike Cruz (Videography), Tibor Bartalos (Photograhy) and Doug Hough (Race Course Designer), Glenn Horenberg (30th Annual Certificate Design), and Petr Cavan (Ambassador’s Cup Presentation on behalf of Ambassador Petr Kolar and the Czech Embassy) for bringing their special talents to our race.

The
Bača Cup Race is a shining example of Euro-American relations and with the core group of volunteers and ski racers involved it just keeps getting better.

We also wish to thank Ute Parma "The

From The Race Coordinators;

Well another years race has come and gone and the bragging rights have been established for the coming year. Congratulations to "Flyin" Ian and Radka on their stunning victories and congratulations to all our racers for being part of this great tradition. Truly this years race was "Great Fun" and the memories will last forever.

The 2007 Bača Cup Ski Race was probably the best organized race we have ever held thanks to the efforts of some very special people. In this regard, we would like to thank the following:

1. Frank and Reiner for their help in getting the numbers assigned and keeping the race gate and start organized.

2. Dasha for coordinating registration, organizing the initial spreadsheet information, and establishing the race flights. In addition, Dasha made the incredible Moravian Goulash for the awards gathering.

3. Diane for "stepping up" to oversee racer recognition, gate and statistical coordination.

4. The Blue Knob Racing and Mountain Staff for letting us take over their mountain and for giving us the opportunity to "Rock and Roll" as only "The Bača Cup" can.

5. Mike for coming to the course (while injured) and taking the photos of our racers on the course. We especially thank Mike for bringing us his talent in designing and creating "The Plaque" to recognize past and future Bača Cup Champions.

6. Ian for his tireless efforts in being our website Guru. Online registrations development and ongoing technical support. (2007 Outstanding Assistance Medal Winner)

7. Jaroslav for taking time from his busy schedule to address the crowd and present the Ambassadors Cup.

7. Glenn for his spreadsheet design and development, statistical assistance in the racing booth, and his outstanding certificate design. (2007 Outstanding Assistance Medal Winner)

8. Ute for her incredible hospitality and amazing display of epicurean delights.

9. Tomas "The Bača" for guiding the flock for another year and sharing the wisdom of his grandfather Jiri "Bača" Parma with us all.

Any race coordinators in the world would be grateful to have such an incredible support staff and this years event was a tribute to these wonderful folks. The entire race from start to finish was completed in 1 hour and twenty five minutes. Amazing!!!

In closing, we wish you all a great year and happy skiing. We look forward to seeing everyone back next year to help us celebrate the 30th Bača Cup International Invitational Ski Race.

Carl and Dasha Fletcher
